This is a record of my research into the LONG family who migrated to South Africa in 1820 (as part of a British Government immigration scheme).

The following link provides a detailed overview of the 1820 Settlers. It was written by Tessa King, presented to the West Rand GSSA 2005:

The Story of the 1820 Settlers

Jeremiah Long, his wife Ann and two sons James Dorrington and Jeremiah embarked at Liverpool on the Stentor on 24 December 1819. They only sailed on 13 January 1820 and reached Table Bay on 19 April. As the ship's charter expired at this port, they were transshipped to HM Store Ship Weymouth for the voyage to Algoa Bay, which they reached on either 15 or 22 May. They were part of George Smith's Party.

To get a feel for what it must have been like on these ships on the lengthy and hazardous journey, the following link includes the ship log and was written by Sue Mackay:

HMS Weymouth - Log and Muster

Was your wife related to a Boyley who disembarked from the Waratah at Durban in 1909?

Yes, her grandmother was Hannah Ellen Eliza Boyley from Ballarat.
Are you related and how so?
